Vermont Gambia Women’s Organization
The Challenge.
Despite decades of progress, global poverty reduction has slowed. More than half of the 700 million people living in extreme poverty reside in Africa and women are disproportionately affected. No effort to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity will be successful without empowering women.
THE POWER OF WOMEN: Our Solution.
Educating girls, helping women start small businesses, encouraging women and girls to be leaders strengthens families and communities. In 2023 VGGP bought two large tents, and the following year 75 chairs, to start a rental business cooperatively run by the female members of the community. One year later, this business is a huge success. The women agreed to save their proceeds and they have opened a bank account with the dream of someday making micro-loans to help local women start and grow small businesses.
“Female Empowerment increases the ability of women and girls to make their
own choice and transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes.
